Peel-and-stick LED strips tucked under the cabinets wash the counters in warm light, which does two things: it makes the workspace genuinely more usable, and it visually pushes the walls back. Choose 3000K warm white (not daylight blue) for a cozy glow. A 16-foot smart strip costs $20–30 on Amazon, plugs into a regular outlet, and most can be trimmed to fit.
